Question:

Is there a company that makes a vegan, organic, compost?

Answer:

We don't know of a company that makes vegan organic compost. If any one out there does know we would like to hear from you. If you have the time and space you can make your own vegan organic compost.

There is a lot of science out there on how to build a compost pile, but I'll give you the quick (vegan) and dirty on it. First to be truly vegan, means don't put any animal products in your compost. Many books will tell you that you need to add rotted manure to your compost pile- well I think that a bunch of cow s__., you don't need it. Just put in garden waste, veggie waste from your kitchen, leaves grass clipping, hay etc. Don't add any oily foods.

Start by layering about a ¼ inch of small branches (you can even use dry corn stocks) at the base of your compost pile. This allows for some airflow at the bottom of the pile. Then add "greens" - fresh grass and garden clippings, kitchen scraps, and/or comfrey. Next you will add a layer of "browns" - dried leaves, hay, and old weeds (watch for seed heads - don't add them) and/or dried clippings from your garden. Finally, you will continue the process until you have a compost pile approximately 3' x 3'. Add water until it is the consistence of a wrung out sponge. To make the process go faster turn your pile once a week to really get things cooking. Cover your pile to protect it from the too much water if you live in a rainy climate.

Aeration is an important part of composting. Make sure your pile gets good airflow to keep the little composting organisms happy. Good luck- happy vegan organic composting!
