Natural Baby and Childcare

by Lauren Feder, M.D.
Review by Cynthia Mosher

Called "the bible for natural baby and child care" Lauren Feder, MD, covers a broad range of topics about babies and children that a natural living-oriented parent would need and want. This is not your typical, mainstream baby and child info book. Chapters include "Thinking Holistically about Pediatric Health and Illness," "Natural Parenting Basics," "Bonding Mind and Spirit," and "Natural Medicine Chest."

What I appreciate the most about this book is that it does not tread the mainstream path. It delves into topics of concern to all parents and looks at them through a natural lense. Television and Video Games, Breastfeeding in Public, The Best Diet for Nursing Mothers, The Elimination Diet, Healthy Fabrics for Baby Clothing - these are some of many things parents need to hear and know about. There's a full section devoted to Common Childhood Conditions as well as one for developmental milestones for and pertinent topics about newborns, toddlers, children, and preteens. The book concludes with a generous list of resources and further reading which will be a big help a parent new to natural family living.

Natural Baby and Childcare is one of those books that makes you feel good about buying and giving as a gift to someone you would like to subtly guide to a better way. Make this one of your baby shower gifts. If we could place a copy into the hands of every parent, babies and children will have a much better start in life!
