Book Review

Victor's Picnic with the Vegetarian Animals
by Radha Vignola
Review by Bonnie Barker

Victor's Picnic with the Vegetarian AnimalsWe love this book! It is marketed for 2-7 year olds, but the sepia-toned illustrations didn't keep my daughter's interest until age 3-1/2. This is a follow-up to the earlier book, 'Victor the Vegetarian: Saving the Little Lambs.'

Although the term 'vegetarian' is used, everything mentioned in this book is vegan.

A little boy named Victor learns about foods that vegetarians eat: vegetables, beans, grains, fruits, nuts, and seeds. In a dream, a deer teaches him about some physiological differences between carnivorous and vegetarian animals. The carnivores they meet have sharp teeth, sharp claws, and limited jaw motions. They share a picnic with various vegetarian animals, from gorillas and elephants to chipmunks and little pocket mice. We found it thrilling to learn that even big, strong gorillas are vegetarians, too. Victor is excited about the abundance of vegetarian foods, and all of the choices available. The book concludes with a simple song.
