I have been giving my 9 year old son flax oil. Is it safe for a child that is 9 years old to take it? Can it have any adverse reactions? Thanks - Steve

Dear Steve,

Flax oil (or flaxseed oil) is safe for a healthy child of 9 years. However, it is possible to give him too much, throwing off a healthy balance of essential fats and putting the child at risk. Just under one teaspoon per day is sufficient for this age; do not give over 2 teaspoons in a given day. Always add the oil to warm or room temperature (not hot) foods, and never cook with it. Flax oil blends nicely into smoothies and salad dressings. For more information on flax oil, see this question and answer.
