I play the violin and also ride horses. The bow for the violin is made of horse hair, and the tack, bridle, and saddle on the horses are made of leather. Do I have to give up my hobbies now that I am vegan? Are there alternatives to these items? Am I expected to give up these things because I am vegan? – Cat

Congratulations on going vegan.

You might be able to find a vegan bow to use for your violin. I would post around on vegan message boards and find out if anyone knows of an alternative for you.

Similarly, you might be able to have a non-leather tack, bridle, and saddle made for when you go horseback riding. However, you should know that many vegans consider horseback riding to be cruel to the animal. They are not made to be ridden. You might want to consider that aspect as you move forward.

As to what's expected of you - nothing. There is no law book, despite what some people might think. Do what you feel in your heart is right. Being vegan is an evolutionary process. I don't know anyone who has gone 100% pure vegan overnight. Give yourself some time to explore how you feel about it all. You'll make changes as you feel comfortable.
