I'm trying to give my 15 month old a good healthy vegetarian diet, though somedays we do splurge and have chicken and sometimes other meats but I'm trying to slowly cut them out and DH is not going for it so I will have to buy meat for him and cook it sepearte for him to pursue my ambitions to become vegetarian and eventually vegan, blah he was supportive for a few months but has been buying meat Ick. Even when we have meat I have never been big on meat in my life I never have ate much and in high school for awhile had none.

For breakfast I give fruit and some days infant cereal, for lunch she has veggies and some kind of bread/pasta/dry cereal

She usually has an afternoon snack of fruit and sometimes cheerios too.

For dinner she has more veggies w/beans(her fav is kidney beans) and sometimes pasta or whatever we are having.

She has atleast 24 oz of soy milk a day and I try to give extra on the days I don't give beans.

Do you think she is getting enough protein? I know the soy milk has tons of plenty of protein to meet her aprox. 19g requirement do you think its okay to skip days on beans I don't typically buy many other meat alternatives such as veggie burgers so those are even rarer.

Oh and I forgot sometimes she has fruit juice typically apple or white grape(natrual 100%) and never more than 6 ounces a day.

I would keep track of her protein intake for a few days and check in and see if she is getting enough. Sometimes on some days you will serve more protein and on others less. As long as it balances at the end of the week you're good.

Tofu is high in protein. I would keep legumes a part of her daily diet if you can.

Do you have Becoming Vegan? Great book. Will answer all your questions and is a good reference.

Thanks. I'll keep a log and if I have questions will post it back here. :)

I don't have that book but Ironically I placed hold on the copy at local library they will probably have it ready for me tomorrow along with Raising Vegetarian children or something or other. :) I had tried to check them out before but the main library in the city doesn't have it but the little sub one do and they will be transfering it for me. :) So hopefully tomorrow I can ad it to my reading list. :)

I did read the articles here and the babies and toddler chart months ago and tried to start making her diet healthy.

Should I aim for 19 grams other than soy milk or does the soy milks protein count? Or should I could maybe 8 grams of the soy milk and try to get another 8 grams in legumes and such? :)

You can count the protein no matter what form it's in. But it's always best to get it from a variety of sources.

Remember, that all foods contain protein. Try nut butters too like almond butter, cashew butter, etc.
