Autumn Harvest
Autumn is such an incredible time. For many it is a time that signifies harvesting summer's bounty. It is also a time for pulling more inward and feeling the gratitude for all that we have been given. For some, in more mild to warm regions, CSA's still provide a colorful assortment of fresh veggies, nuts and at times, even grains. A good way to locate local CSA's is through the neighborhood co-op. Typically the co-ops work hand and hand with local farmers. Article continues below While I am thoroughly enjoying these colorful and festive days, my heart does go out to many of the smaller almond growers. I have mentioned the pasteurization mandate that has been imposed upon them in recent articles. The USDA continues to refuse reinstatement of a public comment period to potentially reverse this decision. Wanting to get the "inside report", I asked a very kind, organic almond grower from Fresno what he thought of the situation. He stated that the pasteurization process would cost him an additional one hundred thousand dollars and thus far, he had lost twenty percent of his sales, because of this measure. Many small farmers can not handle this type of outcome. It seems that it is up to the public to protect our food supply and keep it vital. The farmer that I spoke with and each co-op that I have talked with regarding the almond predicament has been so grateful that an average person took the time to voice their opinion, on the farmers' behalf. This being said, I inspire you to take this time to reflect on all that you are grateful for. As you are doing this, perhaps take a few moments to thank the farmers that bring you vital food. Think about the farm workers that help prepare this food for your table and lastly think about ways that you can help keep our food system vital and alive! Alerts 1.The Cornucopia Institute continues to stay abreast of the almond mandate, with their Authentic Almond Action alerts. Currently Cornucopia has begun directing energy towards congress. Please visit the Cornucopia website at http://cornucopia.org/ for ideas on contacting key congressional members, to protect almonds. 2. Have a sweet tooth? Well in 2008, you may want to reconsider your sources of sweetness. Soon, say the rumors, one leading sugar producer will be attaining their sweetner from genetically modified sugar beets. A main problem with this is that products will not be lableled any differently. Consider taking the time to follow Organic Consumers Association and asking American Crystal to not support bio-technology and continue to support sustainable practices. http://www.democracyinaction.org/dia/organizationsORG/oca/campaign.jsp?campaign_KEY=12700 3.
