Bute Island Sheese

Review by Caroline Yoder

Sheese Grilled cheese. Macaroni and cheese. Pizza. These are all the foods to which we often turn when we're in need of a little comfort. Until recently, I thought that meant vegans couldn't indulge in these beloved foods of childhood. What changed my mind was a product called Sheese.

As a vegan web-surfer, you've probably read about Sheese at least once on the myriad vegan websites and blogs in existence today. Vegans around the world rave about the wonders of Sheese. Everyone wants to know "What is this amazing dairy alternative? Where can I get it?" Because it is sold mainly in the United Kingdom, it has been difficult to find here in the United States. But we have good news for you! It is now available from Black Duck Imports.

There are currently 9 different flavors of Sheese: Blue, Cheddar and Chives, Cheshire, Edam, Gouda, Medium Cheddar, Mozzarella, Smoked Cheddar, Strong Cheddar. I received samples for 8 of the 9, (Cheshire was not included). All surpassed my expectations—I have become accustomed to the rubbery cheese alternatives available in my local grocery store. Sheese, however, captures the texture of real cheese without the unnecessary cruelty to animals. While some flavors retain a waxy quality (most perceptibly in cheddar), any of the Sheese products would satisfy a craving for dairy cheese. On its own, Sheese may seem a tad strange to an omnivore's taste buds, but when grated and melted it tastes just like the real thing.

A one ounce serving of Sheese provides 95-100 Calories, 8 grams of fat, and 4 grams of protein. I was disappointed to see that each serving provides only 3% of your daily calcium needs, a nutrient that vegans may have difficulty obtaining. Sheese is made primarily of vegetable oil and soy beans; carageenan is used as a thickener. There are no hydrogenated oils either?impressive considering many dairy-free cheeses contain significant amounts of this unhealthy fat. Bute Island proudly proclaims that its product is dairy-free, lactose-free, gluten-free, and Kosher. Bute Island also produces a dairy-free Creamy Sheese.

If you're having trouble locating Sheese in your area, visit the Bute Island website to order a case of 6 or more Sheese flavors (ships from the UK). US residents can order directly from Black Duck Imports.
