Silk by White Wave

Review by Erin Pavlina

White Save Right up front I have to say that I'm not the biggest fan of soymilk. I never quite got used to the taste of it in my cereal. Sure, I cook with it, no problem. And yes, I've tried so many different brands and they all taste different. The problem is, I really didn't like any of them unless they were in a cake recipe.

One day my father mentioned he was drinking Chocolate Silk. My father, the meat eater, was drinking soymilk? Voluntarily? Something didn't compute. I said, "And you like it?" He said, "Yeah, it's fine. Why, you don't drink it?" How could I admit to my father that his vegan daughter wasn't drinking soymilk, the ultimate vegan staple?

Chocolate SilkNow, I know my dad's likes and dislikes and I decided that if he liked Chocolate Silk then it must taste pretty good. So next time I was at the store I bought a very small container. One thing I liked about this product from the beginning was that it is stored in the refrigerator section and comes out ice cold.

I got a nice tall glass, opened the carton, and started pouring. It looked just like chocolate milk. I stared at it for a second and hallucinated that it was actually sitting there with its arms folded and tongue sticking out at me, daring me to try it. I said a silent prayer to the junk food gods and took a gulp. Swallowed. Hmm. Tastes just like it looks...it tastes like how I remember chocolate milk tastes!

As if on cue, my husband and toddler came ambling into the kitchen. My husband got a glass and gave my toddler her sippy cup. They held them out to me and said, "We want some." Steve loved it, of course, he's not at all picky. I wondered if Emily would like it since this was something totally new to her. She took a sip and realized it wasn't apple juice and wrinkled her nose. But after a few more sips she got a really bemused look on her face and held her cup out for more. Since that day, all she asks for is Silk. We have to buy 3-4 gallons a week to satisfy the three of us. We're hooked. Try it, I think you'll be hooked too.
