Objecting to Dissection
by the National Anti-Vivisection Society

Refusing to dissect animals can be a difficult choice. It can be a long and difficult road for a student who voices an objection to dissection. Generally, the process begins with a student who expresses his or her feelings to the teacher involved. Some teachers, perhaps threatened by a student rocking the boat of conformity, will subject the student to subtle and even direct forms of verbal harassment. Often, they indulge in intimidation to "test" a student's convictions.

Adding to the pressure of having to confront a teacher, a student who objects to dissection is often subjected to teasing by fellow students. Peer pressure to conform is very strong, and the pain of being "rejected" by your peer group can be excruciating.

For this reason it is critically important for parents to provide strong and direct support when their children refuse to dissect. They need to continually let their children know that they are tremendously proud of them for standing up for their beliefs.

For students objecting to dissection, their strong ethical concern over the practice of dissection often manifests itself in a queasy stomach, watery knees and perspiration. Younger students may not be able to verbalize their feelings adequately, and many teachers mistakenly interpret these physical symptoms as signs of weakness, over sensitivity or squeamishness. However, they are signs of overwhelming compassion and concern for the dignity of other living creatures. No one should ever be ashamed about the gift of compassion. It is to be celebrated and applauded - never mocked.
