Why Did You Go Vegan?

Cat

Two Thanksgivings ago, my family visited my grandmother for the annual dissection. As I sat there, with my mashed potatos and carrots and slices of turkey breast, I stared at the dessecated carcass and suddenly started imagining the poor thing with a head and feathers, strutting its stuff and gobbling. I fell ill, not just from the image but I think something was seriously wrong with the meat. I dropped meat cold turkey (pardon the unintended pun) right there, and by the following September I was vegan.

I originally did it for animal rights as well as health (I mean, I figured, how healthy can it be to chomp down on meat three square meals a day??), but I had no idea how much I'd love it. The food is delicious, the pounds fly off, and I no longer get sick (and when I do, I'm back on my feet in no time... I was over mono within a week!!). To this day, just memories of that ill-fated Thanksgiving make me cringe.

I mean, meat? Yech.
