Why Did You Go Vegan?

Cat

It's ironic to be a vegan with a name like Cat, isn't it? :) I went vegeterian two years ago; even more ironic, my conversion was kicked off on one of the most beloved American holidays around: yep, Thanksgiving.

I don't know WHY I did it, but I remember staring at this roasted turkey when all of a sudden, this image of my dogs appeared. Hey, why do we eat turkeys but not dogs? Since when were dogs "worthy" enough of being our companions, but turkeys weren't? Did a dog and a turkey have the same soul? Suddenly, that steaming roast turkey became, in my eyes, nothing more than the decomposing cadaver of a poor, tortured bird. I felt ill.

Over the next few weeks, I read a lot. Vegsource.com. "Conversations with God". Writings by Sri Swami Satchidananda. As I went, I became convinced that vegeterianism was the way to go. I had immediately given up all meat except fish after that fateful Thanksgiving, and a few months later I finally gave up fish (my favorite food then, but recently while home from college, I took a whiff of my mom's red snapper and recoiled from the smell. Amazing how your perceptions can change!!). I went vegan my freshman year of college when I read a book by Erik Marcus. Besides, i was nearly vegan anyway. Milk was disgusting, I hated cheese, and eggs? Whatever. The only non-vegan item I really ate was ice cream, and soy ice creams took care of my fave snack food :)
