Why Did You Go Vegan?

The first time I heard the word 'vegan', I had no idea what it meant. I never distinguished one vegetarian from another. I grew up with meat at the center of all my meals. In fact, my father was a hunter, trapper, fisherman. I never felt right about the inhumanity of it all, but I pushed that out of my mind so as to remain as comfortable with it as I could. When I married, I prided myself on making elaborate meat-centered meals.

I actually was introduced to John Robbin's Diet For A New America, through a website from a favorite rock and roll singer. I read the book, out of curiosity, and haven't looked back since. I've been a vegan for about a year now. My husband is joining me almost fully now, and our daughter is asking very interested questions about it.

Funny thing is, I've always been a somewhat sickly person, and I have a rare thyroid disease that was diagnosed three years ago. ONLY since I began my vegan diet has my condition improved exponentially. In fact, to the doctor's surprise (he told me it would never happen) the lump they kept checking for cancer is almost completely gone. I run five miles a day and eat a variety of healthful plant and soy foods. I've never felt better about myself or my life. All because of opening my eyes and listening to my heart.
