Why Did You Go Vegan?

When I was 16 I went on a family camping trip to a remote part of beautiful Montana. To get to our camp site we had to drive several miles down a dirt road, alongside a lake in a dense forest.

One day while driving back from town to our campsite, we came around a corner and immediately spotted a deer standing in the road. We stopped the truck and sat for what seemed like eternity. The deer was very curious and did not seem afraid of us at all. I put down the window and slowly stretched my hand out. The deer was still a good 10 feet away from us. After several minutes the deer started taking slow steps toward my hand and sniffing the air. It finally reached my hand and I felt its soft nose press against my fingers for just a second and then it backed off and continued to stare at us and sniff the air. It was the most incredibly peaceful moment of my life. A noise in the distance finally scared it off. We rode back to the campsite in complete awe.

An hour later, some people that lived up the way from where we were camped came down to see us. In the man's hands was what he said was "dinner...some deer I saw just standing in the road a ways back." It was the most horrifying moment of my life! I knew in an instant that it was my deer and realized that humans killing animals for any reason was unacceptable.I vowed never to eat another animal as long as I live. I am now 30 and have had many wonderful veggie years. I have recently been married. My husband is not veggie yet, but I'm working on showing him the light.
