Why Did You Go Vegan?

Scott

Why did I become vegan? Interesting question, and a long one.

I recently developed asthma, and had to switch my exercise program from doing "Tae Bo" to Yoga, since the former aggravated my asthma to no end, while the latter didn't.

I expected to start losing muscle tone, and getting out of shape as a result. I was pleasantly suprised to discover just the opposite was true: my muscle tone has not only stayed where it was, its improved, along with my edurance and flexibility! Of course, with practicing yoga, I started becoming aware of a general desire to stay away from meat, so I made the switch to being vegetarian.

Now, being an asthmatic, I also realized I needed to eliminate dairy products from my diet. Among other reasons, dairy contributes to excess mucus production, which is bad news for asthmatics. On top of this, I'm lactose intolerant, and was getting tired of spending all that money on "lactaid" in order to eat the stuff (which had been becoming progressively less appealing to me anyway.) So, the only thing left was eggs, and other animal by-products. Today, I eat a 99% vegan diet, and am working towards being as otherwise vegan as possible.

It's had a big payoff for me, my asthma is much improved over before. Not only that, but I'm feeling better overall too. I heartily recommend going vegan for anyone out there with chronic disease (don't stop taking your meds though!) as I'm not the only story I've heard of where this diet has helped!
