Vegan for Her
By Virginia Messina with JL Fields
Review by Melanie Powers
Registered Dietician Virginia Messina along with vegan lifestyle coach JL Fields have put together an all in one super vegan health and lifestyle book directed specially towards women. In their newest book Vegan For Her, they have covered every topic of interest to women and how superior a vegan diet is when it comes to dealing with many of the issues that women face in their life. Hormones, pregnancy, breastfeeding, athletics, weight loss, aging, breast cancer, PMS, stress, depression and heart health – this book literally has it all! Within many of the chapters, sample menu plans are presented and the last section of the book features 54 delicious vegan recipes! Virginia makes understanding the different needs vegan women have so easy to follow and understand and she backs up everything she says with credible studies and research data. This book is a wonderful resource especially for new vegans and a good refresher & resource for long time vegans.
The only downside to this book is it is heavy on soy promotion and just under half of the recipes are soy based. I’m not against the consumption of soy and believe it to be a part of a healthy balanced diet; however no attention is given to the fact that soy is one of the most genetically modified foods on the earth, and we need to be certain that we only buy products that come from either organic or non-gmo soy beans. Also, because soy is also one of the top allergenic foods, women should know that it can cause negative side effects…bloating, gas, digestive upset, mind fog, etc, any many people including myself cannot eat it. For those of us who don’t eat soy due to food allergies or GMO concerns, it would be nice to see the inclusion of other foods that are also high in the same nutrients as soy as an alternative. But otherwise, excellent book with tons of great info!
